Rhino Tracking in Uganda – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch (Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary) is located in Nakasongola district – the only home to wild rhinos and Rhino Tracking in Uganda. The Ziwa Rhino and wildlife ranch is conveniently located just 176km (100 miles) from Kampala, Uganda’s capital on the Gulu highway. Situated just off Nakitoma trading center the ranch is situated on the same highway towards Murchison Falls National Park.
The rhinos in the ranch are thriving as part of the Rhino re-introduction project by Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is currently home to 22 southern white rhinos. You can visit Murchison Falls and the rhino sanctuary on your safari to Uganda. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can experience rhino tracking and see rhinos in the wild which is part of the big five game.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Location along the same highway as Murchison Falls National Park makes it very convenient to combine it with other wildlife safari parks while on your wildlife safari in Uganda. For those interested in spotting the African Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino), Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is a must-visit since it is the only place that has rhinos in Uganda.
Rhino tracking experience at Ziwa
Rhino Tracking in Uganda is such a relaxing and family-friendly activity where individuals enter the home of the southern white rhinos on foot. The activity involves searching for these massive animals with the guidance of a professional ranger guide. Tracking is family-friendly and can be done along with children above 6 years of age.
After briefing and entering the rhino habitat, individuals will get the opportunity to watch the endangered, magnificent creatures. The rhinos move freely through the 7000 hectares of land. From the reception, it is common to be driven by car to where the rhinos are before starting the bush trek.
The rhino tracking will last for a least between 1 h 30 min and 2 h 30 min depending on where the rhinos are spending their day. This makes it ideal to go rhino tracking in Uganda on just a 1-day excursion. The best time for visiting the rhinos is at 08:00h to 10:00h in the morning or 16:00h to 18:00h in the evening.
While here, you will also encounter several other wildlife species and it is possible to spot wildlife like the Uganda kobs, oribis, water bucks, bush bucks, among others. Several bird species can also be seen at the sanctuary.
Ziwa Rhino tracking rates
To track rhinos in Uganda, one is required to pay a fee which is usually determined by the nationality of the visitor. The following are the rates of rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch
